Eyeliners and Mascara...Oh My!!!

The pencil eyeliner is the most popular forms of eyeliner, but not the only choice, liquid, gels and cake liners all provide different effects.. There is a huge choice when it comes to pencil eyeliners, as they are available in every colour of the rainbow and in metallic, matte and satin finishes. Pencils are generally the easiest type to apply and, when sharpened, produce a nice clean line that is easy to correct. Kohl eyeliners are made with softer leads that are gentle on the eye and can be smudged to create a more smoky effect.

Using a black pencil in the inner rim of the eye will make it appear smaller and more sultry. A white pencil in the inner rim opens up the eyes, reduces the appearance of redness and makes eyes appear more bright and alert. WATERPROOF EYELINERS SHOULD NOT BE USED ON THE INNER RIM OF THE EYES!!!

Liquid Eyeliners

  • Wet, almost ink-like liner.
  • Can take a minute or so to dry and any movement while wet can cause them to smudge.
  • They can be tricky to use and mistakes are often messy to correct but, once dry, your liner is set all day (or night).
  • Tend to have a shiny finish once dry.

Gel Eyeliners

  • Gel have a soft, gel-like texture and need a brush to apply.
  • Dries reasonably quickly, but can also be moved or smudged.
  • When almost dry they give an eyeshadow effect, but with more staying power.
  • The finer the brush the more precise the line you can create.

Cake Eyeliners

  • Flat, pressed powder, cake eyeliner is used with a wet brush to create a bold line.
  • Can intensify the lashes, or "smoky eye" look.
  • A thin, flat brush or angle brush, is essential for application .

Mascara...the quality of mascara is all about the wand for application. They come in a wide variety of colours and formulas-basic black to gold, silver and white, lengthening, thickening, curling or a combination of all the above. Some come with primer, to coat the lashes before the colour is applied. This is normally to help thicken the lashes. No matter which mascara you choose, it is more about the application process than the brand chosen for a successful look. Follow these easy steps for an always professional look...

  • Always curl the lashes.
  • Make sure the mascara hasn't dried out - mascara has a 2-3 month shelf life after opening.
  • Apply a few coats of mascara, concentrating it at the base of the lashes and making sure every lash has been coated. (Wiggle mascara wand at the base of lashes, then take it out to the tips of the lashes)
  • Use and eyelash comb to make sure there are no clumps.

I personally love eyelash primer. It is a great conditioning treatment for lashes not only during the day, but at night as well. My personal favorite is DiorShow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum &Primer. It combs, curls, and coats each lash to create a smooth, even mascara base, all while their nourishing treatment serum promotes long-term lash growth, strength and vitality. Worth every penny!!!
